CDI denounces cuban regime’s refusal for authorisation to Paya to participate in its next meeting

La Internacional Demócrata de Centro (IDC) denunció hoy que el Gobierno cubano ha impedido al disidente Oswaldo Payá, líder del Movimiento Cristiano de Liberación (MCL), participar en su próxima reunión, que tendrá lugar el 20 de septiembre en Roma.

La Unión Demócrata Cristiana de Centro, miembro de IDC y anfitrión del encuentro, ofreció a Oswaldo Payá participar como invitado especial en la reunión, en la que se abordarán temas como la libertad y seguridad en el mundo, así como la promoción de la democracia.
“La negativa confirma una vez mas el carácter dictatorial e intransigente del régimen cubano. Es una prueba más de la falta de respeto a los derechos humanos que sufre cada día el pueblo cubano”, aseguró el secretario ejecutivo de la IDC, Antonio López-Istúriz.
Asimismo, lamentó el trato dado a los representantes del partido UDC que intentaron tramitar en la Embajada de Cuba en Roma, siguiendo los cauces oficiales, la invitación a Payá, que en 2002 recibió el Premio Sajarov de Derechos Humanos del Parlamento Europeo.

The Centrist Democratic International (CDI) denounced today that the Cuban Government has forbidden Oswaldo Payá to participate in its next meeting,
that will take place the 20 of September in Rome. UDC, member party of the IDC and host of the meeting in Rome, invited Oswaldo Payá to participate as a special guest in the meeting, in which
subjects such as the freedom and security in the world will be discussed, as well as the promotion of the democracy.
“The refusal to the participation of Oswaldo Payá once again confirms the dictatorial and authoritarian character of the Cuban regime. This is just
one more proof of the lack of respect to the human rights that the Cuban people undergoes every day “, the Executive Secretary of the CDI, Antonio
Lopez – Istúriz, stated.
The CDI condemned also today the treatment given to the representatives of party UDC who tried to transact the invitation to Paya in the Embassy of
Cuba in Rome, following the official channels.
The European Parliament granted the Sajarov Prize of Human rights to Oswaldo Payá in 2002.
