Request for the just and humane treatment of Cuban prisoner of conscience Antonio Díaz Sánchez. Peter Šťastný MEP

In his letter to the representations of Cuban Authorities in Slovakia and in the European Union Mr Peter Štastný, Vice-Chairman of the Committee for International Trade, Member of the Budget Committee and Head of the Slovak Delegation in the EPP-ED Group calls on the Cuban authorities for, amongst others the immediate release of prisoner of conscience Mr Antonio Díaz Sánchez.Antonio Diaz Sanchez NPC4.gifIn the letter he says: «For some time now, I have been monitoring the situation of Mr Antonio Díaz Sánchez, who has been imprisoned in Cuba since March 2003 for his activities with the pacifist opposition, which has fought for the establishment of conditions to improve the quality of life of all Cuban citizens. I was disturbed to learn from his wife, Ms Gisela Sánchez Verdecia, that Mr Díaz Sánchez was transferred to a remote prison 700 km away from his home where he is suffering from serious illnesses related to his heart, hearing, prostate, and digestive system as a result of inhumane treatment. While the local hospital diagnosed him with health problems following a physical examination, Mr Díaz Sánchez was not given adequate medical care.»
Mr Peter Štastný is calling for the appropriate Cuban institutions to ensure that Mr Sánchez is provided with adequate medical care during his imprisonment, which he is entitled to in accordance with principles of basic human rights.
At the same time, he is requesting a just reexamination of Mr Díaz Sánchez’s case and his immediate release.
«According to my information, Mr Sánchez has not broken any law or committed any crime for which he should be imprisoned», concludes Mr Peter Štastný.
